The Department of Anesthesiology at Columbia University has been an impressive source of advances in anesthesiology, based largely on research output. To recognize the clinical acumen of the department and to honor E. M. Papper, the former chairman, a postgraduate course was held in December 1969 in which the current clinical practices of the department were described. This book is a compilation of the presentations made at that meeting with some revision and updating.
The chapters discuss in some detail the way in which these practitioners of anesthesia accomplish their day-to-day work. There are several descriptions of precise techniques for anesthesia procedures providing drug dosages, specific monitoring suggestions, and the like. There are two very fine chapters on endocrine problems, namely pheochromocytoma management and hyperaldosteronism. These are helpful discussions for the practicing anesthetist.
