This paperback volume contains the proceedings of a conference held at the Royal College of Physicians of London (February 23-27, 1970) and is enlivened by the interesting discussions that conclude each of the six sections. Some of the high points for me:

(1) There is a limited (but important) clinical application of the modern methods of hormone assay, but this contrasts with their great research potential.

(2) The ability to identify a relapse-prone group from among the hyperthyroid patients who are given suppressive drug therapy.

(3) The fascinating discussion of the management of obesity that emphasizes how doubtful the prognosis is and how high the rate of relapse is—a discussion that hints at the need to study the dynamics of less conventional forms of treatment such as "weight-watching clubs."

(4) The argument that radiology holds great promise of becoming the chief means of differentiating between the varieties of end-stage
