This issue (volume 4) of Progress in Liver Disease comes three years after volume 3 and continues this excellent series under the joint editorship of Hans Popper and Fenton Schaffner. As the authors point out: "The same problems appear but now the advances rather than the questions Predominate and are best reflected in the increasing integration of previously unrelated areas." Major subjects include Australia antigen, immunology of liver disease, pathophysiology of various complications of liver disease and their management, bile acid metabolism, bile flow and cholestasis, and such topics as liver disease produced by liver fluke, alcohol-related liver disease, and drug-induced hepatic disorders.

This book is comprised of 35 chapters, each prepared by a recognized authority. What can one say about this extravagant intellectual feast?
