This book is a compilation of reports given at a symposium at Brook Lodge, Augusta, Mich in June 1971. The authors include many of the outstanding authorities in the field. The general subject of shock is discussed from the aspects of animal shock models, metabolism, mechanisms of shock, cardiogenic shock, intravascular coagulation in shock, pulmonary function in shock, and septic shock.
Therapy of shock is emphasized. Therapy by various vasoactive drugs, steroids, and alpha and beta sympathetic blocking agents are discussed. The type and amount of intravenous fluid administration, respiratory support, acidosis and alkalosis, and other aspects of shock are approached both from the experimental and clinical aspect. Prevention and treatment of pulmonary problems in shock is a most timely subject. Discussion by many other outstanding and experienced physicians add a great deal to evaluating and interpreting the ideas expressed. The book is recommended for all physicians who treat shock
