Abstract

This book is a highly sophisticated treatise on the subject of the relationship of nutrition to fetal and early postnatal development.

A large portion is devoted to physiological and biochemical development in animals of various species, including man. Contributors to this volume discuss development of physiological regulations, enzyme development, cell growth, hormonal and dietary factors in the metamorphosis of digestive and absorptive processes, and lipid metabolism in the prenatal and postnatal periods.

An important section is devoted to the effects of nutrition on cellular and brain development. Each chapter presents a comprehensive review of the topic with numerous citations to which the interested reader may refer.

Written by recognized authorities in the fields of biochemistry, physiology, pediatrics and nutrition, the data presented are derived primarily from animal studies and a conservative approach is taken in the extrapolation of information to humans. Possible relevance of a host of nutritional relationships
