This is undoubtedly the most infuriating collection of disparate essays that have been brought together under such an impressive title! The authors represent a fair sprinkling of mainly British and American "Who's Who in the neurological sciences," another reason why the product is so disappointing.

The material, which the editors do not claim is comprehensive, varies tremendously in quality and in depth; too much of it consists of mixtures of superficial reviews addressed to the not very bright freshman medical student and highly technical notations of very limited interest. Some of the essays are tantalizing (or perhaps, better said, frustrating), as the tone and content essentially imply "We will tell you more when you grow up." The sprinkling of a few electronmicrographs and of some pictures of fancy instruments give it a veneer of actuality.

While one cannot dispute the editors' choice of topics, it is almost laughable to see
