Abstract

This book is a monograph that contains chapters on bacteriology, epidemiology, immunology, histopathology, diagnosis, and treatment of leprosy. The book is not intended for leprologists but is, as the authors state, "a happy medium between the brief chapters on leprosy found in most textbooks and the detailed accounts found in books devoted exclusively to the disease." A bibliography is not included; however, the authors encourage readers wishing additional information or current references to write to them, to the Public Health Service Hospital at Carville, La, or the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta.

I found the book to be concise and very readable. Sixty-eight excellent clinical and histopathologic illustrations are included, 32 of which are in color.

The epidemiology of the disease and common misconceptions about contagion are discussed. Special emphasis is given on how to approach an instance of suspected leprosy including physical examinations, differential cell diagnosis, appropriate
