Diarrhea is a well-recognized complication of ampicillin therapy, with five patients reported to have pseudomembranous colitis. Although colitis is now recognized as a frequent complication of particular antibiotic usage, only one such case has been reported previously to be associated with arthritis. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of arthritis associated with ampicillin colitis, and compare it with the previous case of clindamycin-associated arthritis and colitis and with previous cases of ampicillin colitis.
