We very much agree with Dr McInnis' point about the need for the primary care physician to recognize and address the psychological components of the psychosomatic problems. Interestingly, President Bok's report on medical education at Harvard University, Boston highlights, as one of its concerns, Dr McInnis' point.

The need for a practical response motivates our work. In future work, we hope to address the broader dimensions of the problem raised by Dr McInnis' letter.
