Predisposing Factors for the Diabetic Hyperosmolar State

To the Editor.  —Dr Stollerman, the Editor of the Journal of the American Geriatric Society, has indicated to us his concern that our article entitled "Prognostic Factors in the Diabetic Hyperosmolar State,"1 which was published in his journal, bears too much resemblance with our article entitled "Predisposing Factors for the Diabetic Hyperosmolar State," published in the Archives2. He is particularly concerned about our omission to cross-reference the fact that the same data source was used in both articles. The two articles have in common the same 135 patients with the diabetic hyperosmolar state. The article published in the Archives deals with etiologic factors for the development of this complication of diabetes; in order to identify such risk factors, the 135 cases were compared with 135 hospitalized diabetic controls whose records were reviewed for the purpose of that comparison.
