In Reply. —We would like to respond to the letter that you forwarded to us from Dr Dermot Kenny. Dr Kenny suggests that there may be an increased incidence of stroke in populations consuming substantial quantities of n-3 fatty acids. The Eskimo data concerning stroke and n-3 fatty acids are quite unclear. In fact, Japanese data suggest that there may be a decreased incidence of ischemic stroke in the Japanese populations consuming substantial quantities of n-3 fatty acids. However, an increase in hemorrhagic stroke may occur in this setting. Recent studies have, in fact, documented that n-3 fatty acids lower blood pressure and do not raise blood pressure. There is substantial enthusiasm for the use of n-3 fatty acids in clinical trials for several diseases related to atherosclerosis. We do not think that there are substantial risks and we do think that these trials should proceed.
