BUT THERE is a disorder of the head marked with strong and peculiar symptoms that is relieved only by scratching incessantly on paper with a pen or by pounding on a typewriter or computer.*1 The affected individual may wake up from a sound sleep or be sitting at the dinner table, riding in a car, listening to a lecture, or reading a book when he or she is seized with an attack. I had a sudden attack of this incurable condition while flying in an airplane. Therefore, I was forced to write the first draft of this article in an effort to relieve the generalized itching that almost disabled me.
