The article by Klungel et al1 has strengthened the growing evidence for the role of thiazide diuretics, which are relatively cheaper and probably safer, as first-line antihypertensive agents. Thiazide diuretics have been the standard treatment for hypertension in Great Britain for a long time.2 It is noteworthy that they also are useful in the treatment of osteoporosis,3 to which many hypertensive patients are predisposed because of common risk factors such as age, sedentary lifestyle, and smoking.
