Access to Cost Information
Comment on “Availability of Consumer Prices From US Hospitals for a Common Surgical Procedure”

JAMA Intern Med. 2013;173(6):434. doi:10.1001/jamainternmed.2013.887

Senator Claire McCaskill recently relayed her own story of inability to get cost information for her own elective orthopedic procedure. She was discussing health care costs and health care reform and mentioned the terrible waste and misaligned incentives in our system. Then she volunteered that when she had to get a knee replacement, she called 3 places to get the price for the procedure and none would tell her. As she noted, “Even as a US senator I had a lot of difficulty getting accurate price information.”
