The evaluation and management of patients who are in a coma are complex and challenging. It requires an inquisitive clinician with sufficient patience and experience to guide the appropriate medical care, especially when the cause and ultimate outcome remain unknown. In 2008, Dr Wijdicks released the first edition of The Comatose Patient and succeeded at creating a renewed, comprehensive approach for modern times to this difficult clinical problem. Just as our clinical skills improve and refine over time with more experience, the same can be said with the second edition of this work.
