Abstract

This volume fills a need for an up-to-date textbook on the chemical pathology of the nervous system. It brings together in a systematic way what is known about the chemistry of metabolic disorders and the nervous system, especially as related to inborn errors of metabolism; the chemical pathology of body fluids and electrolytes, throwing new light on the problems of transfer across the membrane between blood and brain; the neurochemistry of convulsive states and allied disorders, with an optimistic anticipation of delineation of the neurochemical factors governing neuronal activity, and the biochemistry of mental disease, with which almost half the volume is concerned. Perhaps a more valuable contribution than the excellent bringing together of data in this volume is its examination of past and current hypotheses, especially in regard to the biochemistry of mental disease.

There is a long roster of able contributors and discussants. The volume is warmly recommended
