by R. Loch Macdonald and Bryce Weir, 518 pp, with illus and tables, New York, NY, Academic Press, 2001.
Drs Macdonald and Weir have made an outstanding contribution to the clinical and basic neurosciences. This project, as Dr Kassell elegantly states, is truly a magnum opus in the field of arterial vasospasm. This text has something for everyone. There is a wealth of basic science material detailing the basic molecular biologic properties of smooth muscle, followed by a scholarly review of virtually all available clinical research and clinical trials that are germane to this topic. More importantly, however, the authors have used their encyclopedic knowledge in this arena to place these studies of varying design and methods into perspective for the reader.
