2nd ed, by Charles P. Wilkenson, MD, and Thomas A. Rice, MD, 1133 pp, with illus, $204, St Louis, Mo, Mosby–Year Book Inc, 1997.
In the second edition of Retinal Detachment, retitled Michels Retinal Detachment in honor of the deceased Ronald Michels, MD, the authors undertake the most difficult task of updating a single reference source with the rapid advances and changes in vitreoretinal surgery. They have succeeded beautifully in improving on their very complete and exhaustive first edition.
The authors have extensively updated the chapters concerning the use of heavy perfluorocarbon liquids in the surgical repair of complicated retinal detachments, including giant retinal tears and proliferative vitreoretinopathy. The use of the perfluorocarbon liquids has revolutionized the repair of such complicated detachments and the authors thoroughly describe their surgical application.
