by Torrence Makley, MD, 96 pp, with illus, Columbus, Ohio, the Ohio
State University Medical Center, 2000.
Our department is especially grateful to Isaac Newton, not only for
his work in spectral physics, but for reminding us always that "we stand on
the shoulders of giants." Dr Makley has introduced us to some of these giants,
and he has given us some of his shoulders as well.
Dr Makley's book celebrates the 70-year history of the Department of
Ophthalmology at Ohio State University, Columbus, and the leaders who moved
it into contemporary medicine. The endeavor was a labor of love for Dr Makley
and his assistants, Robert Magnuson, MD, and Morris Battles, MD. They chronicle
the evolution of medical practice in central Ohio, the foundation of Ohio
State University in 1870, and the merging of the Starling Ohio Medical College
in 1914 to establish the Ohio State University College of Medicine.
