Dr Lichter, a glaucoma specialist, chairman of the University of Michigan Department of Ophthalmology, and director of the Kellogg Eye Center, Ann Arbor, Mich, is 1 of 3 US members serving on this council. The purpose of the council is to improve standards in the practice of ophthalmology worldwide to combat and prevent blinding eye diseases.
He leaves the same position at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles, Calif.
The lifetime achievement award in the field of cornea and external disease is presented annually. Dr Lemp is clinical professor of ophthalmology and past chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, DC.
