Candid Reporting on Complications, Then and Now

Arch Ophthalmol. 2001;119(2):309. doi:

Mr Hoffman is correct; I quoted selectively from the article on hexagonal keratotomy published in Ocular Surgery News, August 1, 1992. The confusion arises from my assailing uncritical comments by enthusiastic surgeons and uncritical reporting by the news media. The Ocular Surgery News article on hexagonal keratotomy is an example of highly responsible ophthalmic journalism, presenting both the uncritical opinions of enthusiastic surgeons and critical denigration of the procedure by other surgeons. For this, the publication is to be commended.
