José-Alain Sahel, MD, has recently been elected to the Academy of Sciences of the Institut de France in the Human Biology and Medical Sciences section. Dr Sahel is professor of ophthalmology at Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris; professor of biomedical sciences at the Institute of Ophthalmology, University College London; chairman of the ophthalmology departments at the Quinze-Vingts National Ophthalmology Hospital and the Rothschild Ophthalmology Foundation, Paris; and Director of the New Vision Institute, Paris (a Foundation Fighting Blindness Centre). He is the first ophthalmologist ever to be elected to this assembly.
