Multipurpose disinfection solution (MPDS) has dominated the marketplace since its introduction to the public in the 1990s. Solution manufacturers have successfully met the needs of busy consumers who frequently ask that their contact lens disinfection systems be simplified and the time required to do the steps shortened. Multipurpose disinfection solutions combine the previously independent steps of cleaning, rinsing, disinfecting, enzyme cleaning, and lubricating into one step, by means of a single product. When the recommended directions from the manufacturer have been followed, MPDSs have had an excellent safety record throughout the world. To ensure compliance with manufacturer recommendations, patient instruction is a vital component to the contact lens fitting process.
