A. C. Woods in his monograph entitled "Allergy and Immunity in Ophthalmology" cited the experimental work of Hess and Roemer, who "found that retinal tissue had antigenic properties and produced lytic and agglutinating antibodies." However, regarding ocular disorders noted by certain authors in cases of food idiosyncrasies, he expressed the opinion that "there is little reason to believe such occurrence is other than a coincidence; and there is certainly no definite evidence to indicate that such ocular disorders are due to food allergy."
I am unaware of any reference to the possibility of the existence of clinical retinal allergy other than the report of the personal observation of Arthur Coca. The following case is therefore reported because it has certain features suggesting a causal relationship between food allergy and an ocular disorder.
