Recent advances in energy amplification techniques have culminated in the development of a new light source, the laser (optical maser).1-3 The unusually intense, monochromatic beam which characterizes laser emission is of particular interest to the ophthalmologist and may find wide application in the biomedical sciences.4,5The present study describes the gross and microscopic appearance of ocular lesions produced by a pulsed ruby laser. Therapeutic photocoagulation, potential research applications, and personnel hazard are discussed.
