Abstract

To the Editor:  I would like to point out the reasons why the recent experimental conclusions reached in my laboratory on the action of the superior oblique muscle (published elsewhere in this journal) differ so greatly from those of Tokumasu, Goto, and Cohen (Archives of Ophthalmology73:851-862). These authors claim "good agreement between... experimental and theoretic data," and support current concepts of superior oblique muscle action. I hope to demonstrate in this letter that, on the basis of these authors' own published observations, just the contrary appears to be true.To begin with, the theoretical analysis employed is based on certain assumptions for which anatomy cannot provide the proof. How can you tell from morphology that "the functional insertion changes with different eye positions" (p 853) or that "eye movements produced by superior oblique muscle contraction should vary with eye position" (p 853)?
