Abstract

This paper reports an evaluation of the synthetic cyanoacrylate adhesives as a possible replacement for sutures in muscle surgery. Experimental sutureless muscle surgery has been reported, but bond strengths and histological patterns have never been evaluated. The use of adhesives has practical importance in clinical application in humans after the safety factors are known. Investigation showed that with current techniques and materials, this procedure is not feasible, due primarily to inadequate bond strength and forward extension of muscle tissue to in front of the joint.
