Abstract

Devoted collectors of the "one-man library of ophthalmology" will have double cause for rejoicing at the appearance of the 11th volume of the System: it is actually two books in one. Moreover, the subjects are among those closest to the experience and interests of the greatest number of practicing ophthalmologists. Although Sir Stewart has co-opted as collaborators Messrs. James R. Hudson, John H. Dobree, and Barrie Jay, all the fine flavor of "The Duke" and his impeccable, inimitable style are preserved intact. Here are the same delightful historical vignettes, illustrated with select engravings; the same appreciation of presonalities, recognized by rare photographic portraits; the same scholarly synthesis of theories, with fair presentation of both sides and the avoidance of dogmatic pronouncements and personal bias; and, as a signal and reflection of the general excellence of the production itself, the same perfection of layout, proofreading, and illustration that we have come
