With this volume, the "System" comes to an end. There is no question that the "System" compiles all aspects of ophthalmic morphology, physiology, and pathology—their history, development, and treatment. Nothing like this is available in any other language at the present time. It can only be compared with the old German handbook of Graefe-Saemisch that has been out of print and obsolete for several decades.

The fact that this is the work of one author makes it even more remarkable. There is no chance that such a feat can be duplicated in the future. Any attempt to collate the future state of ophthalmology will have to be undertaken by a large team. Sir Stewart Duke-Elder is the last polyhistor in ophthalmology. We all have to be grateful to him for undertaking and completing such a monumental work, and no matter what our native tongue, this work establishes English as the
