The alleged benefits of extracapsular cataract extraction and posterior chamber lens implantation have yet to be convincingly demonstrated, yet this surgical approach is rapidly gaining favor among ophthalmologists today. Although it was not introduced until 1977, surveys indicate that posterior chamber lens implantation with a J-loop style lens—or one of its many derivatives—is now the procedure of choice among more than 60% of practicing ophthalmologists.
