This book is written as a "surgical guide to retinal detachment repair." It details the personal preferences of the author in an honest and conversational manner and provides a rationale for the selection of each option. A stepwise approach to each aspect of the scleral buckling operation is offered—ophthalmoscopy, retinal drawing, surgical technique, and postoperative management.
Although it is intended as a guide to retinal detachment repair, this book more appropriately would be considered as a brief introduction to the narrower subject of scleral buckling surgery alone. In this regard, the author faithfully includes the accepted highlights and complications in both text and tables, and the basics are illustrated with simplistic, though somewhat crude, figures. The use of solid silicone exoplants with cryotherapy is presented exclusively, and the design and surgical execution of such a buckle is presented clearly and in a manner that might serve as an appropriate departure
