The editor of this two-volume set has succeeded in drawing together the contributions of 56 authors. They include many prominent figures in contemporary cataract surgery and lens implantation, such as Cornelius Binkhorst, D. Peter Choyce, Philip Hessburg, Henry Hirschman, Charles Kelman, Manus Kraff, Richard Kratz, John Sheets, Robert Sinskey, and Clifford Terry, to name a few. Rather than a condensed summary, as one meaning of the word compendium suggests, these books actually constitute an encyclopedic coverage of modern cataract and lens implant surgery.
The two volumes are nicely bound and are printed on quality paper. Overall, the books are well illustrated, although the number and quality of illustrations vary from chapter to chapter. Some illustrations are quite crude; others are excellent (eg, chapter 15). The chapters are usually well referenced, but again references cited may vary in number from none to 143.
