A New Guideline for Patients With Cataract

Abstract

On February 25,1993, a clinical practice guideline for the management of functional impairment due to cataract in adults was released by the US Public Health Service. It is the culmination of 2 years of work by a multidisciplinary panel of private-sector experts appointed by the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). I believe that this voluntary guideline can be of significant value to practitioners and the patients they serve. The guideline is published in several versions: the Guideline Report, containing the review of relevant literature and the recommendations for care; a distillation of the guideline report known as the Clinical Guideline; a brief version, the Quick Reference Guide for Clinicians (to be published in a forthcoming issue of the Archives); and a version suitable for use by patients, the Patient Guide.
