Abstract

In reply  Dr Pruett raises many points regarding the role that photorefractive keratectomy may ultimately play in the ophthalmological armamentarium, most important, the question of whether the current safety and efficacy profile of photorefractive keratectomy, based on available data, is sufficient to meet the needs of many patients. Those are critical issues with which ophthalmologists and their patients will have to grapple over the coming years. Because of this uncertainty, our economic forecast was modeled over a broad range of efficacy assumptions (Figure 1 of our article1) to provide the readership with insight into the effect of treatment efficacy on our analysis. However, the ultimate efficacy of photorefractive keratectomy is separate from the economic analysis that we presented in our article. The one point that I do wish to respond to emphatically is that neither I nor my coauthor owns any stock in any company currently developing or marketing
