Abstract

Determining what lies ahead in a career as a physician after many years of training can be a frustrating task. Reliable information is not easy to find. While images of physicians abound in popular culture, they often serve to confuse rather than clarify; novels, television shows, and movies typically give a distorted view of practicing medicine.

Helping the situation for potential physicians is My First Year as a Doctor: Real-World Stories From America's MDs. This book is part of a series that presents employment in a variety of fields, including medicine, law, publishing, and teaching. It is an interesting and enjoyable collection of 18 vignettes, each relating a physician's experience in his or her first year of practice. While principally a guide for those who are considering entering the medical field or for medical students who are choosing a field, these thoughtful accounts will also be of interest to laypeople
