Massive Proliferation of Conjunctival Tissue After Cryotherapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity

A multicenter trial of cryotherapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) has shown that cryotherapy is a beneficial treatment for threshold ROP.1 It reduces unfavorable structural and functional outcomes for eyes with ROP. Several anterior segment complications of cryotherapy, such as conjunctival or subconjunctival hematoma, unintended conjunctival laceration, and transient corneal clouding,2,3 have been reported. However, these are all temporary and do not usually disturb visual development.

We report a case of bilateral circumferential massive proliferation of conjunctival tissue affecting visual development in a patient after cryotherapy for ROP. We believe this complication of cryotherapy for ROP has not been previously reported.
