Abstract

In 1961 F. Rintelen, Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Basel, published an excellent textbook of ophthalmology intended primarily for students of ophthalmology and general practitioners. Because ophthalmology has made rapid advances in the last decade, Professor Rintelen has now prepared a second edition of his book. Although the outline is unchanged, the format has been somewhat altered. A new feature is a discussion of the differential diagnosis of headaches. In addition, the list of medications used in ophthalmology has been brought up to date.

The drawings and photographs are excellent but there are not nearly enough illustrations of clinical entities. One would like many more photographs to accompany the fine text. Another criticism applies to most textbooks of ophthalmology. There is no specific section devoted to medical ophthalmology nor to congenital and developmental syndromes which involve the eye.
