Innervational Plasticity of the Oculomotor System

Abstract

Studies in 14 Rhesus monkeys utilizing superior and lateral rectus muscle cross-transplantation resulted in return of conjugate eye movements within ten days. Electromyographic recordings from transplanted and normal extraocular muscles indicated no change in innervational patterns. Central sixth nerve stimulation and postmortem orbital examination demonstrated that observed ocular movement can be explained mechanically and need not result from innervational plasticity.
