Combined fluorescein-anesthetic solutions for use in applanation tonometry have been advocated by a number of clinicians. Because of the widely recognized danger of bacterial contamination, principally from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, ophthalmologists have been understandably reluctant to use these preparations. One such solution (Fluress) seems to be an ideal preparation in terms of patient comfort, accuracy of intraocular pressure determination, and antibacterial activity in a fresh preparation. This report extends previous observations by documenting the antibacterial effectiveness of the solution under the adverse conditions which might be encountered in clinical practice.
