We thank Haigh for his comments regarding our report1 and welcome the opportunity to respond to his comments. He suggests that the overall survival effect of thyroidectomy in the treatment of papillary thyroid carcinoma was “already known.” In fact, Haigh and colleagues' 2005 report2 is referenced only with ambiguity in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's papillary thyroid carcinoma treatment guidelines3 and is completely absent from the American Thyroid Associations guidelines,4 suggesting that the issue is not yet conclusive.
