The Guidelines of the American Thyroid Association (ATA) have long been, and continue to be, the “bible” for the treatment of thyroid disease. The latest edition is due out shortly (or may have just come out by the time you are reading this), and despite its thoughtful and complete approach to the nuances of managing thyroid disease with multidisciplinary input from national leaders, questions of surgical relevance still remain.

With this in mind, and with the assistance of Ralph P. Tufano, MD, MBA, who will assist me as a special coeditor for this Viewpoint series, the journal will publish a number of Viewpoints, authored by leaders in our field, who will provide their perspective on the topic of concern.1 We know you will find these of significant interest and hopefully of equal value in your clinical practice.
