The 2015 American Thyroid Association (ATA) management guidelines for adult patients with thyroid nodules and differentiated thyroid cancer1 are expanded substantially from the 2009 guidelines.2 Not only has there been an increase in the level of evidence reviewed and detail discussed (from 434 to 1078 references, 47 print pages to 411 double-spaced draft pages, and 80 to 101 recommendations), but there is also more discussion of molecular markers, risk stratification, de-escalation of radioiodine therapy, and new systemic therapies. Modifications of the guidelines for preoperative imaging have been relatively few yet significant.
