Within the field of otolaryngology–head and neck surgery, few developments have been as revolutionary as the cochlear implant. In the 30 years since the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first multichannel auditory device, hundreds of thousands of individuals with severe to profound hearing loss have undergone cochlear implantation and reaped its benefits, and that number continues to grow exponentially. Yet this rapidly evolving, life-changing technology did not come without growing pains for those who provide this specialty service, including the cochlear implant center.
