Computerization has touched all aspects of our daily practice of medicine. Data retrieval, Internet searching, e-mail, and photographic documentation are but a few examples. Syms and Syms describe one of the challenges and exciting potentials of combining the computer with electronic communication. Telemedicine will certainly be part of our clinical practice in the very near future. It has already been explored by some centers internally to communicate between geographically remote locales. The basics are now in place to bring this new technology into common use. The electronic transmission of text, the spoken word, and images is already available, and the quality and convenience of this transmission are being improved more rapidly than we can imagine. The business world, and particularly the entertainment industry, is moving rapidly to satisfy the perceived desires of the "wired" public.
