The thymus is at its greatest relative weight at birth (approximately 13 g), while its greatest absolute weight occurs just before puberty (approximately 35 g). The thymus promotes the immunocompetence of T lymphocytes in early childhood.1 The involution of the thymus begins around the first year of life, when lymphocyte depletion begins.2 Despite its lifelong process of involution, the gland is thought to always function to some degree.
