It is the purpose of this article to introduce a check list which we have found useful in the University Hospital Audiology and Speech Service for the informal differential diagnosis of functional hearing losses and for instruction of medical students.
Previous articles5,9,10 have noted the increase in the incidence of functional hearing losses being seen clinically. This increase may be attributed to the following:
Greater awareness of the problem.
Increase in acoustic, physical, and psychological trauma.
Liberalization of compensatory interpretation of the law.
Liberalization of the private point of view in obtaining compensation.
The "Psycho-Tell" is the product of the realization that a goodly number of the cases referred to the Audiology and Speech Service for simple and routine hearing tests were neither simple nor routine. In addition, it was noted that a number of outside referrals had been unsuccessfully tested before being passed on
