Error in Figure Legends and Results and Comment Sections: Evaluating Tonsillectomy as a Risk Factor for Childhood Obesity

JAMA Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2013;139(4):418. doi:10.1001/jamaoto.2013.2574

Error in Figure Legends and Results and Comment Sections. In the Original Article by Levi et al, “Evaluating Tonsillectomy as a Risk Factor for Childhood Obesity,” published in the October issue of JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery (2012;138[10]:897-901), there were errors in the percentages and raw numbers of patients in the legends for Figure 2 and Figure 3, in the first 2 sentences of the second paragraph of the Results section, and in the fourth sentence of the second paragraph of the Comment section.

The legend for Figure 2 should have read: “The percentage of overweight children (≥85th percentile) before and after tonsillectomy. Forty-one percent of children were overweight before surgery compared with 46% after surgery. This difference was not significant (odds ratio, 1.23; 95% CI, 0.82-1.82;  = .36).”

The legend for Figure 3 should have read: “Percentage of obese children (≥95th percentile) before and after tonsillectomy. Twenty-five percent were obese before surgery, and 33% were obese after surgery. This difference was not significant (odds ratio, 1.44; 95% CI, 0.93-2.22; P = .12).”

The first 2 sentences of the second paragraph of the Results section should have read: “Forty-one percent of children were overweight (BMI% ≥ 85) before surgery compared with 46% after surgery (odds ratio [OR], 1.23; 95% CI, 0.82-1.82; P = .36) (Figure 2). Twenty-five percent were obese before surgery, and 33% were obese after surgery (OR, 1.44; 95% CI, 0.93-2.22; P = .12) (Figure 3).”

The second paragraph of the Comment section, sentence 4, should have read: “Twenty-five percent of the study group were obese before surgery, and 33% were obese after surgery.”
