THE PRODUCTION OF TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS IN THE RABBIT AND THE CHANGES IN ITS CEREBROSPINAL FLUID

Abstract

Experimental meningitis, especially tuberculous meningitis in animals, has attracted little attention in the field of medicine. The first work on the subject was that done by Manwaring1 in 1915. He succeeded in producing in dogs and in monkeys infection of the meninges, by injecting suspensions of tubercle bacilli into the subdural space through a trephine opening in the cranium. With this exception, we have been able to find no instance of tuberculous meningitis experimentally produced.

The work embodied in this paper is part of the study of experimental meningeal infection in the rabbit.

The experiments were made on adult rabbits and consisted, first, in producing tuberculous infection of the meninges, and second, in confirming the peculiar changes in the cerebrospinal fluid.
