This small book, which was written for the layman, is educational and yet as interesting to read as a novel. Without sensationalism Dr. Goldston tells the story of the development of ancient and modern drug therapy from plant to chemical agents. For two thousand years drugs were entirely of plant origin; for the past four hundred years research has been carried on in the search for chemical drugs which could be used in the treatment of the diseases of man. It has been only within the last ten years that the sulfonamide drugs, the most successful of these chemical agents, have been developed. They represent medicine's greatest victory over infectious diseases. The courage and inspiration, the frustration and disappointment and the success which was finally achieved by the men who played a part in their development is told.
