Using the entire MEDLINE database efficiently requires multiple CD drives; therefore, it is beyond the reach of most physicians and departments. Pediatricians running a search on the unabridged MEDLINE database may get hundreds of references, most of them irrelevant to their specific domain. When we cross matched the terms "asthma" and "budesonide," the unabridged MEDLINE database yielded 331 matches, most of them irrelevant to the pediatric field. To overcome these problems, Aries Systems Corp, North Andover, Mass, is offering a more specific and lower-cost database, PediLine, that specializes in pediatrics. Performing the same search as before on the PediLine database, 50 matches were retrieved, all relevant to the pediatrician.
